About SGF

The Street Guardian Foundation (SGF) addresses the unique challenges faced by young men of color in Los Angeles, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. In a city marked by socioeconomic disparities and systemic inequalities, these youth often encounter barriers that hinder their ability to succeed and thrive. SGF recognizes the intersectionality of race, poverty, and systemic injustice, and tailors its programs to address these complex realities.

For young men of color, the journey from foster care or group homes to adulthood is fraught with additional obstacles. They are disproportionately represented in the foster care system and are more likely to experience homelessness, incarceration, and unemployment compared to their white counterparts. SGF’s programs provide a vital lifeline for these youth, offering mentorship, guidance, and resources that are culturally responsive and relevant to their lived experiences.

Through workshops and mentorship initiatives, SGF fosters a sense of identity, belonging, and pride among young men of color. By centering their voices and experiences, we empower them to navigate systemic barriers with resilience and determination. Moreover, SGF’s emphasis on critical thinking and financial literacy equips these youth with the skills needed to challenge structural inequalities and pursue economic independence.

Additionally, SGF’s international travel opportunities play a transformative role in the lives of young men of color in Los Angeles. Many of these youth have never ventured beyond their immediate communities, and international travel provides them with exposure to diverse cultures and perspectives. This exposure not only broadens their horizons but also instills a sense of agency and possibility, showing them that they can transcend the limitations imposed by their circumstances.
